Contraction Timer: Popzy

Time your contractions with one tap

Tap when a contraction starts, tap again when it ends. Popzy records how long each one lasts and how far apart they are, and shows the pattern as it builds.

Follows the 5-1-1 rule, or the 4-1-1, 3-1-1 or custom timing your midwife gave you.

How it works

How to time contractions with Popzy

Two taps per contraction. Popzy does the counting.

Tap when it starts

Press the big button the moment you feel a contraction begin to build.

Tap when it ends

Press again once it has eased off. Rate how strong it felt with one more tap, if you like.

Watch the pattern

Popzy shows each contraction's length and the time since the last one, measured start to start, and compares the last hour with your rule.

What the 5-1-1 rule means

Many midwives and doctors give a simple rule for when to call or head in. 5-1-1 is the most common one.

  1. 5minutesapart, start to start
  2. 1minutelong, each one
  3. 1hourof keeping that pattern

Some providers use 4-1-1 or 3-1-1, especially for a second baby. Pick the rule they gave you in Popzy, or set your own timing. When your contractions have matched it for an hour, Popzy lets you know so you can call them.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about Popzy

How do you time contractions?
Time two things: how long each contraction lasts, from the moment it starts to build until it fades, and how far apart they are, measured from the start of one to the start of the next. In Popzy you tap once when a contraction begins and once when it ends, and the app works out both. Read more →
What is the 5-1-1 rule?
5-1-1 means contractions about 5 minutes apart, each lasting about 1 minute, for at least 1 hour. Many providers use it as the point to call or head in for a first baby. Your midwife or doctor may give you a different rule, and their advice comes first. Read more →
When should I go to the hospital?
Go when your provider or maternity unit tells you to, usually after you call them once your contractions match the rule they gave you. Call straight away, whatever your timing shows, if your waters break, you are bleeding, your baby is moving less, the pain is constant or it is before 37 weeks. Read more →
Braxton Hicks or real contractions?
Practice contractions usually stay irregular and ease off when you rest, drink or change position. Labor contractions keep coming and grow longer, stronger and closer together. Time a few in Popzy, then rest. If they keep coming, or you are not sure, call your provider. Read more →
Does Popzy work offline, without an account?
Yes. Popzy has no account and no sign-up, and it times contractions without an internet connection, so it keeps working in the car, the lift and the delivery room. Your contraction history stays on your phone, and you can delete all of it in Settings. Read more →
Is Popzy a medical device?
No. Popzy only times contractions. It cannot tell how labor is progressing and does not replace your midwife, doctor or maternity unit. If you are unsure about anything, call them. Read more →

Popzy is not a medical device. It times contractions and does not replace advice from your midwife, doctor or maternity unit. If you are unsure, or if your waters break, you notice bleeding, your baby moves less or anything feels wrong, call them.
